Biography
I have travelled and taught all over the world and studied at various universities, most recently doing my Masters in Fine Art at Birmingham City University in the UK. For the last seven years I have been a practicing artist and sculptor with a studio on the beautiful Welsh borders. I am currently exhibiting at Mid Wales Arts centre.
Much of my sculpture is figurative, referencing myths, religion and science-fiction – from texts or my imagination. I try to use the most appropriate materials to match the concept (or visa versa): mostly clay, plaster, metal, but also resin, paper or waste products. I like to explore the engineering of my structures.
I have drawn all my life and find it provides a free-flowing access to my subconscious. Often I can group these images to demonstrate an archetype that relates to myth and psychology. Sometimes a tiny doodle can look striking when enlarged or in print. At other times I express my feelings directly and freely in acrylic on large canvases. My work is informed by regular
life studies of people and of the landscape. My heroes are diverse – from Bernini to Gaudier Brzeska and Sarah Sze, from Hogarth and Goya to the Chapman Brothers.
I would like to contrast a sense of awe at humanity’s wonderful place in life, with the mess left by our abuse of each other and the natural world. Thus some of my figures crawl in internal or external darkness, while others fly and dance in space and light.
